May 10, 2008 - Las Vegas
By Veronika Kawka

There are those occasional few times a year when the Las Vegas tennis community gets together to celebrate and honor those who have achieved great success in many aspects of life, whether it be on or off the court. This year’s Tennis Ball was no exception. Coming back to attend this year’s event, I knew it was going to be even bigger and better than the last. Sure enough this year’s event was a giant succ
ess.

Tennis Ball 2008 was generously held by USTA-Nevada, Ritual Tennis, and Winnie and Bob Schulman. The Schulmans not only offered to host this event at their home but have supported the Marty Hennessy Junior Tennis Foundation for years, giving many local tennis juniors the opportunity to travel to tournaments across the country. This event would have never been possible without the help of people like the Schulmans. One of the greatest traditions of an event like this one is that it is organized by the tennis juniors themselves along with the help of many of the dedicated parents. It’s great that an event like this can be so well put together and turn out to be such a great success.

This year’s ball included a full- fledged tennis apparel fashion show courtesy of Ritual Tennis Clothing. Local tennis junior girls showed off their other talent, modeling, to showcase the designs of Pamela Rooks and Sari Lopez. Councilman Larry Brown and Alejandro Monteverde (director of Bella) also appeared to give the tennis juniors some inspiration and a bit of advice. After awards were given out, the dance floor was open. Mani Trump provided music to keep everyone dancing the night away. The great food and dessert provided by David Alenik and The Pasta Shop and Laurie Steed’s Granello Bakery left everyone satisfied. Not to mention Ellie Smith’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, brought goose bumps all around.

All in all the night was a great success and prepares the groundwork for an even greater ball next year. A special thanks to Councilman Larry Brown, Bob and Winnie Schulman, Mike Agassi, Ellie Smith, Alejandro Monteverde, the Bellon Family, Marty Hennessy, USTA-Nevada: Tim Blenkiron, Ryan Wolfington, Rob Merriman, Ritual Tennis Clothing (Pamela Rooks, Sari Lopez),Laurie Steed, Granello Bakery, David Alenik, The Pasta Shop, Marriott, and all the juniors and parents that put this event together.
