On Sunday, Alexander Zverev will visit a doctor in Shanghai to evaluate his injured right big toe, which he hurt while serving during his opening-round victory against French player Valentin Royer at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

During the final point of the match, Zverev experienced discomfort in his toe while following through on a serve. After winning the point, he made his way to his chair, removed his shoe, and requested the ATP physio for an on-court evaluation.

Despite the injury, Zverev returned to serve out the match convincingly. He remained on court for post-match interviews, signed autographs for fans, and underwent further assessments by the physio.

“I can’t quite pinpoint what went wrong, so we’ll have to investigate,” Zverev stated to ATPTour.com after his second check-up. “The physio assured me there’s no bone injury, but we haven’t done any scans yet. It could be a tear in a ligament or something similar, but the specifics are unclear.”

“We’re consulting with doctors to determine the next steps. I’m hoping it’s nothing severe and that I can keep building without any more setbacks,” he added. “This year has been really challenging physically for me. We just discussed in the locker room that the last time I played a tournament without pain was during the Australian Open.”

Despite the pain, Zverev managed to close out the last game, relying on strong service and quick points. “Thankfully, I had a solid serving day,” said the world No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “That kept me afloat during that game; I was glad to avoid long rallies that could have worsened the situation.”

At 28, Zverev has notched his 48th win of the year according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss index. In the next round, the 2019 Rolex Shanghai Masters finalist aims to redeem himself against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech after their five-set encounter at Wimbledon earlier this year, where he faced a narrow loss.
