Twice Madrid champion Alexander Zverev secured his spot in the fourth round with a 6-3, 7-6(2) win over Terence Atmane, marking his ninth appearance in the later stages in the Spanish capital. Despite facing a hiccup when he dropped serve at 5-4 in the second set, Zverev repurposed his focus to clinch victory in just one hour and 37 minutes.
Meanwhile, Alexander Blockx celebrated the biggest moment of his career, outplaying World No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime with a score of 7-6(3), 6-3. This impressive win makes Blockx the first Belgian male to topple a Top 5 rival on clay since David Goffin’s 2017 victory against Novak Djokovic in Monte-Carlo. He is set to meet Francisco Cerundolo next.
Cerundolo advanced smoothly to the fourth round, defeating Luciano Darderi with a score of 6-2, 6-3. He displayed a touch of flair with an audacious over-the-net shot during the opening set.
In further thrilling matchups, defending champion Casper Ruud continued his impressive run, extending his Madrid winning streak to eight matches after a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Norwegian has surrendered only five games across his two encounters and will challenge Stefanos Tsitsipas next.
Tsitsipas, who was the finalist in 2019, breezed through his third-round match, dominating local favorite Daniel Merida with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory. His powerful forehand and smooth composure dictated the pace over just 68 minutes.
Also reaching the fourth round is Daniil Medvedev, who sailed past rising star Nicolai Budkov Kjaer with a score of 6-3, 6-2 in just 69 minutes. The seventh seed will next face Flavio Cobolli.
The closing act of the day featured Jakub Mensik, who secured a nail-biting 6-4, 7-6(11) win over Karen Khachanov. The 20-year-old displayed remarkable resilience, saving four set points in the final tiebreak to set up a fourth-round clash with the second seed, Zverev.
