In a challenging matchup on Thursday at the BMW Open, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo faced off against Germany’s Alexander Zverev, ultimately falling with scores of 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16.

Zverev, the top seed and defending champion, showcased his prowess on home soil, successfully converting 5 out of 8 break points during the match, which lasted just over an hour.

Diallo struggled with his performance, winning only 55 percent of his first serve points and a mere 32 percent on his second, while racking up 19 unforced errors throughout the contest.

Late in the first set, Diallo sought treatment for a lingering back issue, which seemed to impact his serving efficiency in the second set.

“I think he had some issues with the back and was not serving fully in the second set,” Zverev commented in his on-court interview. “But I’m pleased with the win and glad to have a more straightforward match today.”

With this victory, Zverev extended his head-to-head record against Diallo to 2-0, having previously triumphed over him earlier at the Australian Open this year.

The world number 3 is set to square off against fifth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo from Argentina in the quarterfinals on Friday.

On the same day, Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ontario, was battling Hungary’s Fábián Marozsán.
