Zizou Bergs: The Journey Unfolds.
By ATP Staff
For Zizou Bergs, every detail in tennis counts—from the thrill of grand tournaments to the quieter moments along the way. Yet, some experiences truly shine.
We caught up with the Belgian player to chat about his most cherished rivalries, significant achievements, ambitions, and unforgettable career highlights.

Your favorite tennis rivalry?
Without a doubt, it’s Nadal vs. Federer. I’m eager to see how things unfold now. Currently, Alcaraz vs. Sinner seems to be the defining rivalry. I can’t wait to see how young talents like Joao [Fonseca] and Learner [Tien] add their own flavor to the mix. Their recent matches in Miami were simply spectacular!
What constitutes a great rivalry for you?
A true rivalry has historical depth, showcasing repeated encounters over time. It thrives on the balance of wins and losses from both sides. Crowd involvement plays a crucial role—while Federer and Nadal often had a gentlemanly vibe, a pinch of provocation can spice things up. It’s all about the energy the crowd brings.
Who do you consider your fiercest rival?
Honestly, I don’t have a single rival. My journey is unique with its own ups and downs. Many young players connect early on through tournaments, but my path has been different. I’ve had a series of gradual leaps, and that sets me apart.
What stands out as the most unique moment of your career?
The French Open, without a doubt. Not only did I achieve a significant milestone with crowd support, but it was a cherished experience. From fighting through qualifiers to making it to the main draw, every match felt electric—especially facing Dimitrov on Philippe Chatrier. The energy was palpable.
What goal or ranking is at the forefront of your mind?
The largest milestone I aimed for was cracking the Top 100. Now that I’ve reached it, my sights are set on Top 50, and eventually, Top 20. That’s my current focus!
What has been your biggest challenge?
The toughest hurdle was grappling with physical challenges, especially cramping issues. It impacted my mental state, too. In 2019, moving away from Belgium to Spain took a toll but ultimately rejuvenated my spirit. The hard work I put in there has truly made me happy.
Which tournament do you love playing the most and why?
Honestly, it’s a tie between Antwerp, the French Open, and the Davis Cup. It’s fulfilling to have the local crowd cheering and feeling a collective energy.
What’s the most memorable off-court experience from being a professional tennis player?
Traveling provides countless memories—from delightful boat trips to intimate dinners with local families. It’s refreshing to step away from just hotels and tennis courts and experience cultures firsthand. The warmth and hospitality from people underlying these moments remind me of the perks of being a tennis player.
