For Iga Swiatek, integrity is everything. So when she faced a provisional suspension due to a minute trace of the banned substance trimetazidine, it plunged her into a deep emotional turmoil.

The Polish star labeled that period the most challenging of her life, filled with anxiety over how her fellow competitors would perceive her. “I’ve always strived to embody a positive role model, so the thought of their judgment weighed heavily on me,” Swiatek expressed during the media day at the Australian Open.

“This situation consumed me; I was scared about what people would think,” she said. “I’ve dedicated myself to being a good influence, to demonstrating integrity and commendable conduct.”

Ultimately, Swiatek secured a one-month ban, attributed to contaminated melatonin sourced from Poland. The entire incident “freaked her out,” she admitted.

“The sense of helplessness in this matter was unsettling,” she revealed, adding that the camaraderie and support of her fellow players within the locker room helped ease her unease. “The atmosphere is fantastic. My peers have been incredibly supportive, which I first felt during an exhibition in Abu Dhabi.”

Her suspension was officially lifted in December, allowing her to return to action.

Many players approached Swiatek, seeking advice on how to safeguard themselves against inadvertently testing positive.

“A number of them reached out to me,” she shared. “They asked, ‘What precautions can we take? How can we be more vigilant?’ Their concern reflects a universal anxiety in our sport.” Swiatek expressed gratitude for the comfort and strength provided by numerous top players during her comeback journey.

As she steps onto the court in Melbourne as the second seed, Swiatek will face Katerina Siniakova in her opening round. With her new coach Wim Fissette by her side, she seeks her first-ever Australian Open final, aiming to surpass her best performance—a semifinal appearance in 2022.
