PARIS — In an exciting announcement, three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and the experienced French player Richard Gasquet are among eight men awarded wild-card entries for this year’s French Open.
Wawrinka, who celebrated his 40th birthday in March, first clinched the Australian Open title in 2014, marking his inaugural Grand Slam singles victory. He followed this up with triumphant runs at the French Open in 2015 and the U.S. Open in 2016.
The Swiss maestro has faced numerous injuries in recent years, resulting in a drop to the No. 132 spot in the ATP rankings.
For Gasquet, this tournament will mark a poignant farewell. The 38-year-old Frenchman, who peaked at a commendable No. 7 in 2007, was once seen as a strong contender for a Grand Slam title but fell short of reaching the finals. Nonetheless, he made it to the Wimbledon semifinals twice and was also a semifinalist at the U.S. Open. With 16 Tour titles to his name, Gasquet was also a proud member of the French team that secured victory in the 2017 Davis Cup.
