ROME — The election of Pope Leo XIV coincided perfectly with the lively atmosphere of the Italian Open, taking place just a stone’s throw from the Vatican.
Tennis is the passion that stirs the heart of the first American pope.
In a 2023 interview with the Augustinian Order, Leo, also known as Robert Prevost, the Chicago-born Augustinian missionary, expressed, “I consider myself quite the amateur tennis player.”
“Since leaving Peru, I haven’t had many chances to play, so I’m eager to return to the court,” Leo added. “Although, with this new role, I haven’t been given much time for that just yet.”
With Rome’s splendid Mediterranean climate allowing for year-round tennis, courts are abundant throughout the city. However, as the Pope, Leo may find his schedule even more packed, leaving little room for leisure.
Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas, previously ranked No. 3 in the world, expressed his willingness to hit some balls with Leo if he can carve out some time.
“Why not?” Tsitsipas told The Associated Press after a second-round victory. “Figures like this might teach us valuable lessons… I feel fortunate to have witnessed this announcement.”
The 2023 U.S. Open champion, Coco Gauff, shared her excitement upon receiving a notification about the new pope, almost joining the masses at St. Peter’s Square.
“But considering my match the next day, sprinting a mile wasn’t the wisest choice,” Gauff remarked after her opening match win.
“Hopefully, he’ll watch some women’s tennis,” Gauff added. “I’m not sure if popes attend sporting events, but maybe he’ll show up at a match someday.”
As Leo was introduced at the Vatican, first-round matches were already heating up at the Foro Italico.
Leo’s brother shared that the new pope is an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago White Sox baseball team as well.
