Celebrating the Life of Per Renstrom
A trailblazer in sports medicine

Per Renstrom, an iconic figure in the realm of sports medicine and a foundational pillar of medical care within the ATP Tour, passed away on March 20 in Stockholm.
Renstrom was pivotal in laying the groundwork for ATP Medical Services. As an esteemed member of the original ATP Medical Services Committee, he dedicated his life to establishing the systems that ensure player health and well-being today. Collaborating closely with David Altchek, he was instrumental in forming the standards and global network of tournament physicians essential to the operations of ATP medical care.
Renowned worldwide for his expertise in orthopaedic surgery, Renstrom significantly advanced medical support at ATP tournaments. He also served for many years as the team physician for the Swedish Davis Cup team. His influence transcended the Tour through his dedicated role on the ITF Sports Medicine and Science Committee, representing the ATP for over 20 years from 1998 to 2019.
A highly respected scientist and educator, Renstrom authored a plethora of research papers and texts, passionately advocating for the growth of tennis medicine. In 1990, he founded the Society for Tennis Medicine and Science, serving as its first Vice President before later becoming President from 2002 to 2007. Over his illustrious career, he mentored countless doctors and physiotherapists, leaving a profound and lasting impact on the global sports medicine landscape.
Renstrom was celebrated for his remarkable ability to merge scientific rigor with heartfelt compassion. A trusted ally among players and coaches, he was esteemed not only for his clinical wisdom but also for the comfort and assurance he offered during difficult times.
In honor of his exceptional contributions, the Per Renstrom Award for Excellence in Tennis Medicine & Science was established in 2025, with Renstrom being its inaugural honoree. He was also proudly inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame for his groundbreaking efforts.
Beyond his remarkable professional journey, Renstrom nurtured a deep affection for tennis that he shared with his son, Marten Renstrom, a former ATP Tour player.
Per Renstrom will be remembered not just as a leader in sports medicine, but as a compassionate, generous, and inspiring figure to all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy will continue to influence and enhance player care for generations to come.
