Toni Nadal has come forward to defend Jannik Sinner, challenging criticisms directed at the current World No.1.

During a recent event announcing the involvement of Casper Ruud, Nick Kyrgios, and Gael Monfils at this summer’s Mallorca Open, Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach expressed his thoughts on Sinner’s recent three-month suspension.

“It astonishes me that several players, including some of the sport’s elite, have voiced opposition against him—especially those who might not be entirely innocent themselves,” he remarked, as reported by Marca.

Nadal asserted that Sinner is undeserving of such a harsh penalty, emphasizing, “I know Sinner personally, and I’m confident he had no malicious intent. Punishing someone for an unintended mistake is unreasonable. We can’t justify the urge to control and penalize every minor infraction.”

He continued, “Consequences should be applied to those who deliberately engage in wrongdoing for personal benefit. I can assure you, that’s not the case with Sinner. He did not profit from the issue at hand. So what’s the rationale for punishing him?”
