Carlos Alcaraz faced a daunting challenge on Friday night against an invigorated David Goffin, ultimately leading to an unexpected defeat.
As the reigning two-time champion at Indian Wells and a previous victor in Miami, the Spaniard finds himself in search of answers as he transitions into the clay season, following his recent setbacks.
Turning 22 on May 5, Alcaraz expressed his bewilderment about his performance.
“I felt like my level was subpar,” Alcaraz remarked to the ATP. “After the first set, I anticipated playing better. Goffin was impressive; he elevated his game. My level didn’t improve, while he stepped it up a notch.”
Struggling to assert control against Goffin, Alcaraz allowed four service breaks and now boasts a season record of 15-4. While that’s not a disaster, it’s a shadow of what the young star aimed to achieve following his 17th title win at Rotterdam in February.

“I wasn’t at my best; physically, I didn’t feel right. When you lack confidence in your physical game, it can be tough to maintain a high standard,” he shared. “My legs didn’t feel strong. I wasn’t injured or sick—felt great before the match. Just a bit nervous, which is usual, but nothing more. I thought I’d deliver great tennis, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.”
