Taylor Fritz looks to put a recent abdominal injury in the past as he sets his sights on a fruitful week at the Miami Open.

In a thrilling match, the third-seeded Fritz managed a hard-earned victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 7-6(2), 6-3.

During the second set, Fritz remained composed amid a grueling eighth game, where he faced five break points before finally converting one and holding serve to secure his nearly two-hour match.

“It’s a huge deal because when you let those chances slip away, it can really play with your mind,” Fritz remarked post-match. “He didn’t have any break points, and you start to think he might get one and break you, and matches often unfold that way. But credit to him; he served flawlessly when under pressure.”

“He didn’t miss a first serve when he was down in a game.”

Currently boasting an 11-5 record this season, Fritz aims for a deep run in Miami after an early exit in Indian Wells, where he was defeated by eventual champion Jack Draper.

The top American player revealed he’s been battling an abdominal injury since Acapulco, stating that while he isn’t fully healed yet, he feels significantly better this week.

“I wouldn’t claim I’m back to 100% yet,” Fritz explained. “I thought I was at Indian Wells, but transitioning back to these softer balls, they do hold onto the racket more, requiring a bit more work from me — especially in the area where I had an issue. However, I’m feeling much better now, and the fast courts really suit my style.”

“I’m eager to get my season back on track because before the injury, I felt excellent about my game.”

Fritz now looks ahead to facing Denis Shapovalov in the third round.
