LONDON — Taylor Fritz had only just settled into his Wimbledon quarterfinal clash with Alexander Zverev, but trouble was brewing as knee tendinitis reared its head just three games in. The realization hit him hard.

“I was in full panic mode, thinking, ‘What’s my next move?’” reflected the sixth-seeded Fritz. “It took me completely by surprise.”

Ultimately, there was little he could do to turn the tide.

Zverev’s formidable serve, combined with the agony in Fritz’s knee, proved insurmountable, leading to a decisive 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 defeat for the last American man standing in the tournament on No. 1 Court on Wednesday.

Fritz, who triumphed over Zverev in the quarterfinals to reach the final at the 2024 U.S. Open, has grappled with knee tendinitis in the past. However, he had no forewarning at Wimbledon this time around, aside from minor discomfort during his fourth-round victory against Alexander Bublik.

“I thought a light day yesterday would set me up perfectly for today,” he said. “My warm-up felt solid. I truly have no idea why it flared up after just three games.”

In an effort to stave off disaster, Fritz called for a medical timeout mid-second set to receive treatment on his right knee from a physio, but it wasn’t sufficient to stop Zverev from breaking a seven-match losing streak against him.

“He’s had my number for the last two years,” Zverev, the reigning French Open champion, commented. “I played a fantastic match.”

Fritz was quick to acknowledge that the outcome might have been similar even without his knee troubles.

“With the way he’s serving, he’s going to be a nightmare to beat,” said Fritz, who managed to earn four break points during the match but failed to convert any. “I don’t want to diminish his performance… I’m just really disappointed I didn’t get the chance to really engage in the match. My focus was all over due to the knee.”
