Madison Keys is set to miss the ATX Open in Austin—a surprising turn of events due to her impressive Top-10 ranking.
The tournament revealed this news on their official website today, stating that Keys, who recently clinched her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, will not be participating.
The ATX Open, classified as a 250-level tournament, is allowed to host only one Top-10 player. “Unless the defending champion is also ranked within the Top 10, we can only feature one player from this elite group,” the tournament explained in their announcement. “This regulation helps maintain competitive balance across all WTA events during the week.
“With World No. 6 Jessica Pegula already confirmed for participation, WTA guidelines restrict us from including a second Top-10 player. When we initially partnered with Madison, she held the 21st spot in the rankings. However, with her recent triumphs in Adelaide and Melbourne, she has climbed to World No. 7. Consequently, this new ranking prevents Madison from joining us for this year’s ATX Open.”
Christo van Rensburg, the Tournament Director, shared her sentiments about the situation: “Madison’s remarkable performances in Australia, where she showcased her exceptional talent, highlight the caliber of players drawn to the ATX Open,” she noted. “We were thrilled at the prospect of having Madison compete in Austin for the first time. While we wish the Top-10 restriction didn’t apply, we respect the WTA rules.”
Mark your calendars! The ATX Open will take place from February 22 to March 2 in Austin.
