NEW YORK — Sorana Cirstea, the renowned tennis player, disclosed that the trophy she earned from a recent women’s tournament was taken from her hotel room in New York while she was competing in the US Open.
In a heartfelt plea late Saturday night, just two days after her exit from the singles competition in Flushing Meadows, Cirstea called for the trophy’s safe return.
“To whoever took my Cleveland trophy from room 314 at The Fifty Sonesta, please bring it back!” Cirstea appealed on Instagram. “It’s not worth anything financially, but holds immense sentimental value. I would be truly grateful!”
Aged 35 and hailing from Romania, Cirstea clinched her third career singles title earlier this month in the Cleveland warm-up event for the U.S. Open. However, she faced defeat against No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova in the second round at Flushing Meadows.
The hotel has opted not to comment on the situation.
