Sinner Triumphs Over Tiafoe 6-2, 6-2 to Secure Spot in Miami Open Semifinals

Jannik Sinner, the Italian sensation and former world number 1, is fiercely pursuing the coveted Sunshine Double. The last player to achieve this remarkable milestone—claiming back-to-back Masters 1000 titles at Indian Wells and Miami—was none other than Roger Federer in 2017.

This season, Sinner, currently ranked world No. 2 and a four-time Grand Slam champion, showcased a dominant performance in South Florida. In just seventy-one minutes, the 24-year-old dispatched the American 19th seed, Francis Tiafoe. Despite starting the year at number 30, Tiafoe has impressively climbed to 20, following his impressive run to the Acapulco finals.

The 28-year-old Tiafoe battled through two intense three-set matches and saved two match points to overcome defending champion Jakob Mensik. However, he found himself up against a formidable rival and ultimately fell short.

Their last encounter took place in August 2024, where Sinner holds a commanding 4-1 edge in their head-to-head battles. As he entered this match, Sinner had not lost a set. He opted to receive after winning the toss.
Although Tiafoe started strong at 300, his rhythm faltered due to four unforced errors. Meanwhile, Sinner kicked off his game with four quick winners, including two powerful aces for a comfortable hold to consolidate his break. Tiafoe managed 3/5 on his first serves, easing to 1-2.

Sinner maintained his momentum, beginning and concluding the fourth game with aces to lead 3-1. After Tiafoe opened the fifth with his first ace, misfortune struck as he dropped his serve due to consecutive groundstroke errors.

Despite a double fault, Sinner fired off two quick aces and held to 30, extending his lead to 5-1. Tiafoe, fighting to remain in the set, unleashed two winners, including another ace. However, Sinner’s powerful serve ultimately clinched the set at 6-2.

In the second set, Tiafoe served first and managed to hold, despite facing two deuces and a break point. Sinner continued strong, delivering aces and holding to love to level the match. Tiafoe struck his third ace, but a series of unforced errors led to his service loss.

Sinner responded with three consecutive winners, including two more aces, holding to 15 and reinforcing his break. Tiafoe made two unforced errors yet managed to hold for 2-3. Sinner, delivering his thirteenth ace, faced a couple of deuce points but ultimately held serve with a winning forehand and a netted backhand from Tiafoe.

With a forehand error opening the seventh game for Tiafoe and two more mistakes, he relinquished his serve. Sinner confidently served for the semifinals, clinching victory with four consecutive winners, capped off by an ace on match point.
His performance was nothing short of clinical. Sinner exhibited composure, determination, and laser-like focus. He finished with an impressive 14 aces, a single double fault, and won 83% of his first serve and 69% of his second serve points.

While he faced no break points, he converted 4/7. His return game was equally dominant, capturing 47% of first serve and 59% of second serve points.

The six-time Masters 1000 champion now awaits the victor of the Alexander Zverev/Francisco Cerundolo quarterfinal. Sinner leads Zverev 7-4 and Cerundolo 4-2 in their head-to-head matchups. Notably, he previously retired while trailing 1-4 against Cerundolo in the 2022 Miami Open quarterfinal.

Sinner has reached the Miami Open final three times. He clinched victory in 2024 against Dimitrov but fell to Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and Daniil Medvedev in 2023.
