Alexander Zverev experienced an unsettling sense of déjà vu as he confronted Jannik Sinner in the finals of the Australian Open.

After a stunning victory over Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, Zverev faced world No. 1 Sinner, who exhibited an uncanny resemblance to Djokovic with his impressive performance throughout the final match.

The top-seeded Sinner showcased his dominance by not dropping a serve, decisively defeating Zverev with scores of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, thereby defending his Australian Open title and extending his winning streak to 21 matches.

Following the match, Zverev expressed his admiration, noting how closely Sinner mirrors the peak performance of 24-time major champion Djokovic.

“He is remarkably similar to Novak at his highest level,” Zverev stated to reporters in Melbourne. “They rarely miss a shot, making you feel compelled to overhit just to compete in rallies against them.”

“Winning points from the baseline is incredibly challenging against both Novak and him. Their movement is exceptional,” he added.

The Olympic gold medalist from 2020 commented on how both Sinner and Djokovic can overwhelm their opponents by restricting their reaction time and space.

“They’re always positioned on the baseline,” Zverev observed. “They provide no room, no time to breathe. Right now, they are simply too good for me.”
