LONDON — In an exciting announcement, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek have been honored with the prestigious world champion awards by the International Tennis Federation for 2024!

Swiatek triumphed over Aryna Sabalenka to claim the coveted women’s singles award, as revealed by the ITF on Monday.

The Polish star dazzled in 2024, clinching the French Open and securing four titles at WTA 1000 events, alongside earning an Olympic bronze medal at the Paris Games. Her phenomenal skills also led Poland to the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup. Meanwhile, Sabalenka, who snagged the Australian and U.S. Open titles, concluded the year ranked No. 1.

Making history, Sinner is the first-ever Italian to be crowned with this award. He wrapped up 2024 with an impressive No. 1 ranking and a remarkable 73-6 record, having lifted trophies at both the Australian Open and U.S. Open, as well as triumphing at the ATP Finals, while also leading Italy to defend their Davis Cup title.

Despite their remarkable achievements, both Sinner and Swiatek dealt with doping controversies last year, which have cast a shadow over their upcoming participation in the Australian Open.

The ITF stated that the selection for the world champion awards was based on “objective criteria,” taking into consideration all players’ performances with a particular focus on Grand Slam, World Cup of Tennis events, and Olympic and Paralympic competitions.

“Last year marked a remarkable time for our sport with the Olympic and Paralympic Games alongside our traditional team events,” commented ITF President David Haggerty. “The incredible achievements of our award winners reflect the inspiration drawn from representing their countries, igniting them to reach new heights in 2024.”
