Another Canadian is making waves in Munich!
Denis Shapovalov joined Gabriel Diallo in advancing to the Round of 16 with a remarkable 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over eighth-seeded Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands at the BMW Open on Tuesday.
Shapovalov showcased his resilience by converting four out of twelve break points. Although he had some hiccups with his first serve—landing three aces but also chalking up six double faults—he excelled with a commendable 75% success rate on his second serve.
The unseeded star from Richmond Hill, Ont., is poised to face the winner of the match between Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the next round.
At 26 years old and currently ranked 39th in the world, the Canadian has boosted his season record to 7-7.
Meanwhile, Diallo is gearing up for a formidable challenge against the top seed, Alexander Zverev of Germany, after a solid win against Ukraine’s Vitaliy Sachko in straight sets on Monday.
