The former world No. 1 has officially become a co-owner of the Toronto Tempo, a new WNBA team making its debut in 2026.
In a recent announcement, the franchise expressed excitement about Serena’s active involvement in its operations.
“I am ecstatic to announce my role in the creation of the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” stated Serena Williams. “This moment is more than just basketball; it’s about highlighting the incredible potential of female athletes.”
“I’ve always believed that investing in women’s sports is a tremendous opportunity. I look forward to collaborating with Larry and the entire Canadian community to build this new WNBA legacy.”
The four-time Olympic gold medalist recently shared an engaging video where she tosses a tennis ball that transforms into a basketball to celebrate her new ownership.
This marks the second time Serena has invested in a sports franchise.
Serena and her sister Venus Williams hold a minority stake in the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. According to Forbes, Serena’s estimated net worth is around $340 million.
“My love for sports runs deep, and I’m thankful for all that I’ve gained through competition,” Serena remarked. “I’m excited to contribute to creating more opportunities for women in athletics.”
The 23-time Grand Slam champion reflected on her connections to Canada, saying, “Canada has always held a special place in my heart. I had my first professional tennis match in Quebec City.”
“And Toronto is unique—the vibrant culture, the delightful food, and the amazing people. Winning my first Rogers Cup here at 19 was unforgettable.”
Coincidentally, the news of Serena’s stake in the Toronto Tempo coincides with her husband, Brooklyn native, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, joining The People’s Bid for TikTok as a strategic advisor as they pursue the purchase of the social media platform.
