INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — The spotlight is on top-ranked Elena Rybakina and world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka as they lead their respective singles groups for the highly anticipated WTA Finals. American stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will face off in the same group, adding excitement to the competition.
The recent draw held on Tuesday organized the eight qualifying singles and doubles teams into round-robin groups for this season’s thrilling finale, which kicks off on Sunday and runs until November 15 at the picturesque Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Throughout the first six days, each player and team will compete against the other three in their group, with only the top two advancing to the semifinals.
Joining defending WTA Finals champion Rybakina in Group 1 are the fourth-seeded Gauff, fifth-seeded Pegula, and the eighth seed, Linda Noskova.
“I’m really excited,” Rybakina said, fresh off her U.S. Open victory. “Each year brings new challenges. Playing outdoors adds a unique twist, and the competition is fierce with so many fantastic champions.”
This marks the first time the Finals will be hosted outdoors since 2023 when they took place in Cancun, Mexico.
In Group 2, besides Sabalenka, fans can look forward to seeing No. 3 seed Mirra Andreeva, No. 6 Elina Svitolina, and No. 7 Karolina Muchova compete.
Last year, Rybakina triumphed over Sabalenka in a thrilling final to secure the title.
Excitingly, French Open champion Andreeva, Muchova, and Wimbledon winner Noskova will be making their Finals debuts this year.
The event returns to the iconic BNP Paribas Open venue, which typically hosts a combined men’s and women’s tournament every March. It has relocated to the sunny Southern California desert from Saudi Arabia due to safety and regional security concerns amid the ongoing conflict in Iran.
In the doubles category, the top-seeded duo of Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani head Group 1, while second-seeded Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova are leaders in Group 2.
Group 1 also includes the third-seeded pair Guo Hanyu and Kristina Mladenovic, fifth-seeded Hsieh Su-wei with Jelena Ostapenko, and seventh-seeded Elise Mertens alongside Zhang Shuai.
Mertens captured the title last year with her partner Veronika Kudermetova, winning against Stefani, who had teamed up with Timea Babos.
The remaining teams in Group 2 consist of No. 4 seeds Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, No. 6 seeds Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs, along with No. 8 seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
