SYDNEY — In a bold move, sixth-ranked Elena Rybakina has come to the defense of her former coach, Stefano Vukov, who is currently facing a provisional suspension from the WTA as they delve into an inquiry over a possible violation of their code of conduct.

This week, Rybakina announced that Vukov would be rejoining her coaching team; however, the WTA’s suspension means he won’t have access to player-exclusive zones like practice courts and training facilities.

During a press briefing in Sydney on Saturday, the 2022 Wimbledon champion expressed her strong sentiments, stating that Vukov “never mistreated me” throughout their collaboration.

“The only thing I want to emphasize is that he has always treated me with respect. I have immense gratitude for all he has done since I was ranked No. 200 and for everything we’ve achieved together,” the 25-year-old Rybakina shared.

At present, Rybakina is training under Goran Ivanisevic as they set their sights on the upcoming Australian Open.

“I’m currently working with Goran, and I’m pleased with the way our training has been progressing over the past few weeks,” Rybakina remarked.

She added that she’s reinstating Vukov to her team because of their six-year rapport, emphasizing that there are numerous aspects they can tackle together off the court as well.

“Naturally, this situation isn’t ideal for me. I’m quite disheartened by some comments I’ve seen, particularly from individuals actively involved in the tour, including coaches and commentators. I believe that’s unjust,” Rybakina expressed.

In response, Vukov stated to The Athletic that he “never abused anyone.”

The WTA released a statement confirming Vukov’s “provisional suspension pending an independent investigation into a potential breach of the WTA code of conduct.”

“As part of this suspension, Mr. Vukov cannot obtain a WTA credential at this time. Typically, the WTA refrains from commenting on ongoing investigations. However, due to recent public remarks that mischaracterize the situation, we felt it necessary to clarify,” the statement read.

“Further details will not be disclosed at this time.”
