Pegula Triumphs Over Jovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to Secure Spot in Wimbledon Quarters

During the festive weekend of 4th of July, tennis enthusiasts witnessed an exhilarating all-American clash in the fourth round as veteran Jessica Pegula, the 4th seed from Buffalo, New York, battled back from a set down to advance to the quarter-finals at the prestigious All England Club.

Iva Jovic, a promising 18-year-old and seeded sixteenth at Wimbledon, displayed her emerging talent in only her second main draw appearance. The Californian dancer gracefully defeated three formidable opponents, including former world #10 and 18th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, to reach the last sixteen.

Both players are known more for their exceptional agility and defensive skills than for standout shots. This matchup marked their third meeting on tour and their first encounter on grass. Pegula had previously triumphed in both meetings this season—on hard courts in Dubai and on clay in Charleston. On Court 1, with gentle breezes providing the backdrop, Pegula opted to receive after winning the toss.

Jovic quickly held serve to 1-0 after benefitting from three backhand errors by Pegula. Despite a shaky start, Pegula struggled with her first serve, missing 6 out of 10 attempts. This set the stage for a tense exchange as Jovic capitalized on her opponent’s missteps.

The tension escalated as both players exchanged errors, with Pegula surprising fans by repeatedly hitting unforced errors. However, she eventually regained her composure, making an ace to hold at love and tie the match at 3-3.

Yet, Jovic continued to impress, showcasing her power with first serves and holding strong to lead at 4-3. Pegula, however, was determined to fight back, but her uncharacteristic errors cost her the set as she ultimately conceded 4-6.

In the second set, Jovic began with authority but faltered under pressure from Pegula, who found her rhythm and seized opportunities with precision serves. After reeling off consecutive points, Pegula took command with a hold to 3-1 lead.

Despite Jovic’s attempts to maintain her game, the tides turned in Pegula’s favor, leading to a crucial break and enabling Pegula to dominate as she prepared to serve for the match.

With an impressive display of skill, Pegula managed to secure the match after overcoming a sluggish start, wrapping up 4/4 on match point with an ace. The transformation was striking, as she shifted from discomfort to commanding the game with five consecutive game wins from the end of the second set into the decider.

With the match statistics favoring Pegula—recording two aces without any double faults and successfully winning 64% of first serve points—she readied herself for her next challenge.

Now, her sights are set on either the two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff or the former world #4 and 2025 Wimbledon semifinalist Belinda Bencic, posing significant hurdles on her path to what would be her first Wimbledon semi-final.

Pegula holds a narrow 5-3 edge over Gauff in head-to-head matchups, having split their encounters on grass. Meanwhile, Bencic leads 4-1 in their history, including their singular grass match in 2015 in the Netherlands.
