“We’re genuinely thrilled to see all three of us in the Top 5,” Pegula remarked about her formidable trio. “Our ultimate aim is to claim the title of the No. 1 American, but it’s wonderful just to see us all striving for greatness against some of the toughest competitors in the game.”

Looking ahead, a significant milestone awaits Pegula this week in Madrid, where she has the chance to rise to the No. 2 spot, potentially overtaking Iga Swiatek.

Pegula, coming off a commanding win against Eva Lys, faces Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the upcoming third round. Should Swiatek stumble early in the tournament, Pegula could very well surpass her. Notably, as the current leader in wins on the WTA Tour in 2025, Pegula stands a solid chance, especially since Swiatek is defending 4,000 points leading up to Roland Garros, while Pegula, missing the European clay swing due to injury, is defending none.

Pegula is currently trailing Swiatek by a mere 175 points in the live rankings. Explore the scenarios that may affect Swiatek’s No. 2 status here. Swiatek has maintained her position in the Top 2 consistently since March 21, 2022.

Should Swiatek exit in the…

  • Round of 32: Pegula ascends with a semifinal finish, while Gauff can bypass her with a final appearance.
  • Round of 16: Similar scenario; Pegula moves up with a semifinal, Gauff with a final.
  • Quarterfinals: Pegula can pass by reaching the final, and Gauff also needs to reach the final.
  • Semi-finals: Pegula advances if she clinches the title, while Gauff must also secure the championship.

If Swiatek makes it to the final, Pegula can still surpass her by clinching the title.
