SHENZHEN, China — In a thrilling showdown, Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro staged a remarkable comeback, each overcoming a set deficit to lead the United States to a 2-0 victory over Britain on Saturday, securing their spot in the Billie Jean King Cup final.
The U.S. is set to clash with defending champions Italy in the final on Sunday.
Ranked seventh, Pegula triumphed over Katie Boulter with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, following the 18th-ranked Navarro’s victory against Sonay Kartal, who she defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Pegula recently showcased her skills reaching the semifinals at the U.S. Open.
Previously known as the Fed Cup, the Billie Jean King Cup boasts the U.S. as its most decorated team with 18 titles, though they last claimed victory in 2017.
The Americans last reached the final in 2018.
Italy’s squad is spearheaded by No. 8 Jasmine Paolini, featuring No. 91 Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the singles lineup.
Both teams bring formidable doubles lineups; Italy boasts Olympic champions Paolini and Sara Errani, while Pegula partners with top-ranked doubles player Taylor Townsend for the U.S.
The best-of-three format consists of two singles matches followed by a potentially decisive doubles showdown.
