MELBOURNE, Australia — Just moments after Alexander Zverev’s defeat in the Australian Open final on Sunday, a voice from the audience rang out, invoking the names of two of the tennis star’s former partners who have previously accused him of physical abuse, shouting, “Australia believes” them.

As Zverev stood at the microphone, prepared to address the crowd during the trophy presentation, the phrase was repeated three times by the vocal supporter, while some spectators in Rod Laver Arena responded with boos and whistles.

During his post-match press conference, the 27-year-old German player was asked to share his thoughts on the disruptive moment.

“I believe there are no more accusations,” Zverev stated. “There haven’t been for—what?—nine months now… I feel I’ve addressed everything I can and don’t intend to revisit that topic.”

On the very day Zverev made it to the French Open final last June, news broke from Berlin concerning the conclusion of a trial related to a domestic violence claim from a 2020 dispute with a former partner. This resolution was reached with the consensus of state prosecutors and both parties’ attorneys.

Zverev has previously refuted an assault allegation from another woman, which prompted an internal investigation by the men’s professional tennis tour. The ATP reported in January 2023 that there wasn’t enough evidence to support the claim.
