SHENZHEN, China — In a thrilling finale, Jasmine Paolini triumphed over Jessica Pegula on her fourth match point, leading defending champions Italy to a decisive victory against the United States in the Billie Jean King Cup on Sunday.

Italy dominated both singles matches in straight sets, eliminating the necessity for a crucial doubles showdown. The eighth-ranked Paolini secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over seventh-ranked Pegula after No. 91 Elisabetta Cocciaretto defeated Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-4, showcasing her prowess by breaking serve three times.

Paolini made her mark by breaking Pegula’s serve with a sharp two-handed backhand down the line, inching Italy closer to victory at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center Arena.

However, while serving for the match at 5-1, Paolini faced a momentary setback. Pegula rallied to save three match points, and Paolini’s two unforced errors allowed Pegula to break back, narrowing the score to 5-2.

A powerful looping forehand provided Paolini with a fourth match point, which she seized when Pegula’s two-handed backhand grazed the net and fell wide, clinching the victory.

With her arms raised in jubilation, Paolini embraced her teammates, who joined in a celebratory dance circling the court amid cheers from their blue-shirted, flag-waving supporters.

Pegula and Navarro had previously showcased their resilience by coming back from a set down to defeat Britain, securing their place in the final.

The Italian squad featured the successful doubles duo of Olympic champions Paolini and Sara Errani, who also captured the French Open doubles title together this year. They were set to face Pegula and top-ranked doubles player Taylor Townsend in a potential trophy decider.

The BJK Cup, once known as the Fed Cup, highlights the United States as the most decorated team, boasting 18 titles, although they haven’t won since 2017.

Italy celebrated its sixth title, marking their third consecutive final appearance, while the Americans last reached the final in 2018.
