Hugo Nys and Edouard Roger-Vasselin turned their earlier 2025 disappointments into triumph at the Kinoshita Group Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo on Tuesday afternoon.
The second seeds clinched a decisive 7-5, 7-5 victory against Rohan Bopanna and Takeru Yuzuki in the finals, marking their first title of the season at the prestigious ATP 500 event. After falling short in the Marrakech and Washington finals earlier this year, they showcased remarkable resilience, winning an impressive 29 of 34 first-serve points, as highlighted by Infosys ATP Stats.
“This is our third final this year, and our first title, so we’re on the right path,” Nys shared. “Our goal is to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals by year-end, so there’s still work ahead.”
Currently ranked ninth in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, Nys and Roger-Vasselin are just 110 points away from the qualification spots held by Christian Harrison and Evan King. The dynamic duo aspires to make a splash at their debut at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin this November.
This victory marks Roger-Vasselin’s third title in Tokyo, previously winning in 2013 alongside Bopanna and again in 2019 with Nicolas Mahut. The seasoned 41-year-old Frenchman now boasts a robust 29-20 record in tour-level finals.
Reflecting on the moment, Roger-Vasselin expressed, “Rohan, we were here 12 years ago winning this title, so it’s wonderful to share this court with you again. You’ve been a significant part of my journey.”

With this achievement in Tokyo, the 45-year-old Bopanna has now become the second-oldest finalist in men’s doubles history during the Open Era. In only their second tournament as a pair, he and Yuzuki remarkably saved three match points to defeat top seeds Harrison and King in the semi-finals.
