Lorenzo Musetti has made history by becoming one of just two Italian men to break into the ATP Top 10 rankings for the very first time. On a thrilling Friday in Rome, he marked this milestone by clinching his first victory as a Top-10 player.
Musetti showcased his skills by defeating Finland’s Otto Virtanen with a commanding score of 6-3, 6-2 in a swift 86 minutes. He is set to face American Brandon Nakashima in the thrilling third round. Since his remarkable Olympic bronze medal run in Paris last July, Musetti boasts an impressive 18-4 record.
After reaching the finals in Monte Carlo and the semifinals in Madrid, Musetti is eager to surpass his previous best at the Foro Italico, where he reached the round of 16 in 2023.
Musetti was joined by another Italian, wildcard Francesco Passaro, who pulled off an upset against Grigor Dimitrov with a 7-5, 6-3 victory, advancing to the third round for a second consecutive year.
Additionally, four more Italian players, including top-seed Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini, will take to the court for second-round matches on Saturday.
