“I knew I was up against a tough opponent; I lost to him at Wimbledon this year,” Musetti remarked, evening his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Basilashvili at 2-2. “He’s a very aggressive player, so staying concentrated on each point is crucial. He played well, but I maintained my composure, particularly on my serve, and I’m thrilled to be in the semis. I’ll be ready for the challenge ahead.”
Basilashvili brought his aggressive game to the match but struggled to match Musetti’s consistency, committing 36 unforced errors compared to Musetti’s 14. So far in 2025, Musetti’s record stands at 32-13 according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, and he’s eyeing his first title of the year.
With his 76-minute victory in the quarter-finals, Musetti has moved past Alex de Minaur to seventh place in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. The 23-year-old is keen to make his debut at the Nitto ATP Finals, and a title in Chengdu could bring him within 145 points of sixth-placed Taylor Fritz.
In the bottom half of the draw, Brandon Nakashima triumphed over Marcos Giron with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(3) victory in an all-American quarter-final showdown. The 24-year-old faced near defeat while serving at 4-5, 40/40, but rose to the occasion, securing his place in the third ATP Tour semi-final of the season.
Following semi-final finishes in Acapulco and Houston, Nakashima will clash with Alejandro Tabilo, who continued his remarkable run from qualifying by overcoming Christopher O’Connell 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach his first semi-final since Mallorca in June.
Watch Tabilo’s thrilling three-set comeback against O’Connell:
After battling form issues and injuries early in the season, Tabilo has turned his fortunes around in China. He recently reached the final at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Guangzhou and has climbed 20 spots to No. 92 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, thanks to his three main-draw victories in Chengdu.
“I’m overwhelmed with happiness right now, especially after coming from the qualifiers. This feels unreal,” Tabilo expressed. “I’m loving my time here in China, and I’m feeling really good about my game.”
