Musetti Aims for Turin Spot in Athens: ‘One Goal Remains’

Lorenzo Musetti is the second seed competing in Athens this week.

It’s straightforward for Lorenzo Musetti: securing victory at the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Hellenic Championship automatically qualifies him for the Nitto ATP Finals.

Although Musetti reflects positively on his season, currently standing ninth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, his ambition is clear—he aims to grasp the ATP 250 title, surpass Felix Auger-Aliassime in eighth place, and earn his spot in Turin.

“This season has been absolutely incredible. If I look back at all the milestones and goals we’ve achieved, this is by far my biggest year,” Musetti shared with ATPTour.com. “And there’s still one objective I’m focused on. After this week, we’ll see what unfolds, but I’m determined to chase that spot.”

Musetti has been vocal about his intention to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. While he yearns to reach the year-end championships, he understands the need to balance his passion for qualifying with the pressure of the situation.

“It’s a challenging mental exercise. I’m trying to avoid overthinking the calculations, yet I’m aware that winning the tournament is essential for securing my entry into Turin,” Musetti explained. “The aim is to always strive for victory, so my goal doesn’t waver much.”

“This week will be demanding, as many formidable players excel on this surface. I plan to take it one match at a time and approach it like any other tournament.”

Nevertheless, Musetti expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming week, which kicks off against either Stan Wawrinka or Botic van de Zandschulp.

“It’s also a matter of mental strength and physical readiness. My last match in Paris didn’t go as planned,” noted Musetti, referring to his first-round loss at the Rolex Paris Masters to Lorenzo Sonego. “I’ve had a few days to recharge, and I’m hoping for a better performance here.”

It All Adds Up

This is Musetti’s first appearance in Athens, though he has played in Greece before during his junior years, and he hopes this trip will leave a lasting impression.

“I had the opportunity to practice in the arena today. It’s impressive and quite sizeable for a 250 event. I really hope it draws a big crowd,” he commented. “Athens is a lovely city with a rich history, and I’d love to explore some of its historical landmarks if time allows.”

“This week offers us a valuable chance to gather points before the cut-off shifts next year, as the Paris Masters will become the deciding tournament for the Race. Let’s make this week count!”
