Lorenzo Musetti’s journey in Vienna concluded in the semi-finals against Alexander Zverev, but the Italian’s performance solidifies his chances for a debut at the Nitto ATP Finals. He has widened his lead in eighth place within the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, now 440 points ahead of Felix Auger-Aliassime. A stellar week at the Rolex Paris Masters could secure his spot in the season-ending showdown.

With heavyweights like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Zverev, and Novak Djokovic already confirmed for the Nitto ATP Finals, four positions remain open in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur, and Musetti currently occupy these spots, while Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud, and Daniil Medvedev are hot on their heels. Two weeks remain for players to accumulate points, including ATP 250 events in Athens and Metz following Paris.

Musetti is determined to join defending champion Sinner on home ground in Turin. Achieving this milestone would not only mark his historic Nitto ATP Finals debut but also make waves in Italian tennis: it would be the first time ever that two Italian singles players qualify for the season finale in the same year. In 2021, Matteo Berrettini qualified but pulled out after one match due to injury, with Sinner stepping in as an alternate.

In Paris, Musetti will kick off his campaign against fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego or a qualifier, and he could face Medvedev in a potential third-round clash.

Shelton, also vying for his debut in Turin, will play either Flavio Cobolli or Tomas Machac in his first match, with Andrey Rublev looming as a potential opponent in the third round. Fritz, who reached the semi-finals in Turin in 2022 and was a runner-up in 2024, eyes his third appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals. If both secure their spots, it would be a rare occurrence, marking the first time two Americans qualify since Andy Roddick and James Blake participated in 2006.

De Minaur is aiming to return to Turin for the second consecutive year. Like Musetti, he bolstered his standing in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin with a semi-final performance this week, only to see Sinner end his run in Vienna.

A likely quarter-final showdown between Fritz and De Minaur looms, with both players racing to qualify. Their previous encounters have resulted in a balanced head-to-head record.

It All Adds Up

With 1,000 PIF ATP Ranking points available in Paris, Auger-Aliassime and Ruud could both leap into the top eight with a tournament victory. Medvedev, the 2020 champion at the season finale, must accrue additional points in Athens or Metz to keep his streak of consecutive Nitto ATP Finals appearances alive at seven.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, sitting on 2,585 points, has a chance to surpass Medvedev into 12th place if he defeats Joao Fonseca in Sunday’s Basel final. That could elevate him to 2,755 points, putting him 990 points behind Musetti.
