The 2025 season has been a rollercoaster for Daniil Medvedev. However, the China Open might just provide the breakthrough he needs.
In a decisive match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the 29-year-old cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory, securing a place in his third consecutive quarter-final at this ATP 500 tournament. Despite a subpar 29-19 record by his usual standards, the 2023 finalist is keen on regaining his competitive edge, previously held when he ascended to No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
“I’ve been lacking that essential game awareness lately,” Medvedev admitted when reflecting on his performance. “I’m working on getting that back—today was a good step forward. Winning those return games requires quick reactions and sharper movements. While there’s room for improvement, I felt things were not too shabby.”
Fresh off a disappointing first-round exit at the US Open last month, Medvedev made the bold decision to part ways with long-time coach Gilles Cervara, now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke. Competing as World No. 18, marking his lowest rank since January 2019, he prepares to face either second seed Alexander Zverev or Corentin Moutet next.
As the former champion of the Nitto ATP Finals, Medvedev has climbed to 21st in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, with the potential to soar to 14th if he claims the Beijing title—his first trophy since winning the 2023 ATP Masters 1000 in Rome.

Earlier in the tournament, fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti displayed resilience, bouncing back from a heart-wrenching loss in Chengdu. He is now slated to meet #NextGenATP sensation Learner Tien in the quarter-finals.
Musetti, currently ranked seventh in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, defeated qualifier Adrian Mannarino with a score of 6-3, 6-3—boosting his quest for a first-time qualification to the Nitto ATP Finals. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Tien upset Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-2, marking his fifth ATP Tour quarter-final appearance (0-4).
