Daniil Medvedev is back to having just one Gilles in his corner.
The former World No.1 made waves on social media today by announcing his split from Gilles Simon, just before stepping onto the court at the ABN Amro in Rotterdam.
“Honestly, it was a valuable experience,” Medvedev shared with reporters in Rotterdam, as noted by tennis journalist David Avakian. “There are many positive takeaways for me and Gilles [Cervara] as we move forward. It simply didn’t pan out as we had hoped in terms of results.”
The duo began their collaboration a year ago, yet Medvedev did not secure a title during Simon’s time with the team.
“We didn’t clinch any titles or Grand Slams together,” remarked the Russian. “But I gained invaluable insights and a fresh perspective on the game, which I’m confident will benefit me in the future. We part on good terms, but our working relationship has come to an end.”
Simon also expressed his thoughts via social media:
“A massive thank you to Daniil and everyone involved for this past year together,” he shared. “It truly was a fantastic experience, one that I’ll cherish. I wish you the greatest success moving forward, especially in achieving your aspirations!”
Ranked seventh, Medvedev concluded the 2024 season with a record of 46-21. This year, he has started with a mixed bag, going 1-1 after a second-round exit against 19-year-old American Learner Tien at the Australian Open.
In Rotterdam, Medvedev is the second seed and will take on Stan Wawrinka in his opening match.
