LONDON — Marta Kostyuk dazzled in her debut on Centre Court, defeating Jasmine Paolini with an impressive score of 6-3, 6-2, propelling her into the semifinals of Wimbledon for the very first time on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Ukrainian also showcased her talent at the French Open, where she battled to the semi-finals before falling to Russian sensation Mirra Andreeva, the eventual champion in Paris.
Overcome with joy, Kostyuk raised her arms in celebration and dropped to her knees as Paolini sent a shot astray on her second match point. After a warm handshake with the Italian, Kostyuk took a moment to execute a joyful pirouette on the court.
Prior to her match, the 12th-seeded Kostyuk had a chance to explore Centre Court on Tuesday, ensuring that she would be ready and not daunted by the experience.
“The entrance and the atmosphere took my breath away,” she remarked during an on-court interview. “I was like, ‘Wow, I need a day to fully process all of this. … I first set foot on this court as a spectator nine years ago, watching Roger (Federer).’”
Kostyuk will return to Centre Court on Thursday to take on Linda Noskova, vying for a coveted spot in Saturday’s final. Noskova earned her place by defeating Elise Mertens 6-3, 7-5 on No. 1 Court.
This marks the first Grand Slam semifinal for the 21-year-old Noskova, who boasts an impressive 10-1 record on grass this season.
“I felt a bit nervous before the match,” admitted Noskova, who triumphed over Jessica Pegula in the Berlin Open final leading up to Wimbledon. “I tend to perform my best when the pressure is on and things feel essential.”
The other women’s semifinal will feature Coco Gauff taking on Karolina Muchova, who, like Noskova, hails from the Czech Republic. They will be the first to compete on Centre Court Thursday.
Paolini, the 2024 Wimbledon runner-up, struggled with 26 unforced errors and managed only eight winners throughout the match.
Meanwhile, two men’s quarterfinals are also in play. British wild card Arthur Fery and Italy’s Flavio Cobolli are set to take to Centre Court, where they had a surprise visit from Queen Camilla just moments before entering the arena.
On No. 1 Court, the French Open champion Alexander Zverev is facing off against American Taylor Fritz.
