In a stunning display, Fabian Marozsan notched his career-high 24th win of the season at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, defeating Swiss wild card Stan Wawrinka with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round.
The Hungarian player had previously secured 23 victories in 2024, but he surpassed that tally in this ATP Masters 1000 event. Marozsan dominated with 83% of his first serve points won, converting his third match point to oust the 40-year-old Wawrinka, who was pursuing the record for the oldest Masters 1000 match winner since the series began in 1990.
Marozsan has a special connection to Shanghai, having made it to the quarter-finals in 2023. Last week, the 25-year-old reached the quarter-finals in Beijing, where he was defeated by Jannik Sinner. His standout achievement this year was a semi-final finish at the ATP 500 in Munich. Next up is a match against Taylor Fritz in the second round.

Earlier in the day, Adrian Mannarino triumphed over former World No. 6 Matteo Berrettini with a score of 7-5, 7-6(5) to secure his place in the next round. The Frenchman has shown great form on hard courts lately, having reached the fourth rounds at both the US Open and Cincinnati. He will face Francisco Cerundolo next.
Marin Cilic, a former semi-finalist, advanced by defeating Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 7-6(5). Ending a six-match losing streak dating back to Wimbledon, Cilic will now take on Novak Djokovic, who leads their head-to-head 19-2.
Sebastian Baez clinched a victory over local favorite Zhang Zhizhen with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, while David Goffin powered past Alexandre Muller 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-1. Zhang had previously made history by reaching the fourth round in Shanghai in 2023, marking the best performance by a Chinese competitor at the event.
Zizou Bergs defeated American Sebastian Korda 6-4, 7-5, while Daniel Altmaier got the better of Tristan Schoolkate with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Jordan Thompson edged past Danish qualifier August Holmgren 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Altmaier will face off against Jannik Sinner in the next round. Other notable three-set victories included Jaume Munar defeating Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Luca Nardi overcoming Sebastian Ofner 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
