Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez has officially pulled out of the Hong Kong Tennis Open on Wednesday, citing a shoulder injury as the reason.

The talented 24-year-old from Laval, Quebec, was set to compete against American player Sofia Kenin in the opening round.

This withdrawal follows Fernandez’s impressive performance, having achieved back-to-back finals in the WTA Tour events held in Tokyo and Ningbo, China.

In Tokyo, she faced off against Russia’s Diana Shnaider, ultimately finishing as the runner-up, just a week after losing to Elena Rybakina in Ningbo.

Despite this setback, her remarkable journey has elevated her ranking, moving up five spots to No. 18 in the world—a significant milestone as she breaks into the top 20 for the first time in over four years.

Stepping in for Fernandez in the Hong Kong event, Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic took on Kenin and secured a hard-fought victory with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
