OSAKA, Japan — Canada’s Leylah Fernandez showcased her talent with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hungary’s Dalma Galfi during the second round of the Japan Open tennis tournament on Wednesday.
The fourth-seeded Fernandez, hailing from Laval, Quebec, served up one ace amid three double faults and successfully capitalized on three out of her eight break-point opportunities throughout the match.
Demonstrating solid play, she won an impressive 78 percent of her first-serve points, while her opponent managed just 55 percent.
Galfi recorded three aces and two double faults, yet was unable to convert her single break-point opportunity.
Looking ahead, Fernandez is set to clash with Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova in the quarterfinals.
