Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez staged a remarkable comeback to clinch her place in the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s tournament on Thursday.
In a thrilling three-set battle, Fernandez triumphed over Turkish qualifier Zeynep Sonmez with scores of 6-7 (2), 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Despite trailing 5-1 in the final set, Fernandez showcased her resilience by executing a crucial service break, allowing her to turn the tide and force a tiebreaker. Both players faced difficulties in holding their serves, with Sonmez having three breaks against her as well.
The match saw a flurry of break points, as Fernandez capitalized on 9 out of 14, while Sonmez had 6 breaks but with a staggering 24 chances.
In terms of serving statistics, Fernandez delivered two aces and committed eight double faults, whereas Sonmez recorded three aces along with three double faults.
Looking ahead, Fernandez is set to face top-seeded Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan in her next challenge.
