Canada’s Leylah Fernandez faced a swift exit at the Dubai Tennis Championships, making for an unexpected turn of events.
In her opening match on Sunday, Fernandez was defeated by Belgium’s Elise Mertens with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in this prestigious hard court WTA 1000 tournament.
The talented 22-year-old from Laval, Quebec, struggled to find her rhythm, serving only one ace and facing four double faults. Unfortunately, she was unable to capitalize on any of her four break-point opportunities.
In contrast, Mertens showcased her prowess with six aces, despite matching Fernandez with four double faults of her own.
She effectively converted four out of 13 break-point chances during the match, which lasted a competitive one hour and 25 minutes.
