TORONTO — The spotlight is on as only one Canadian woman remains in the singles draw at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.
Kayla Cross, a wild card entry from London, Ont., faced a challenging match and fell to No. 28 seed Ann Li of the U.S. with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday.
This leaves Leylah Fernandez, the top Canadian player, as the sole representative from the home nation.
The No. 30 seed is set to take the court Wednesday night for her second-round match against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua, having received a bye during the opening round as one of the seeded players.
At just 21, Cross celebrated her first tour-level victory in the first round against Katie Boulter and is now entering her third season at LSU.
It’s a thrilling day at the WTA Tour 1000 event, with No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina (the 2026 Australian Open champion), No. 4 Coco Gauff, and rising star Alexandra Eala, seeded 25th, all competing on Centre Court.
On Grandstand Court, two-time NBO champion Jessica Pegula, the No. 3 seed, along with No. 5 Mirra Andreeva (the 2026 French Open champion), No. 11 Naomi Osaka, and recent Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, the No. 6 seed, are also set to play.
