Just two months prior, Carlos Alcaraz faced Jannik Sinner in a gripping Wimbledon final. Having triumphed over Sinner for the Roland Garros title, Alcaraz found himself reflecting deeply after narrowly escaping defeat in that championship match.

In their encounter at Wimbledon, Sinner secured a four-set victory, marking his fourth Grand Slam title and drawing closer to Alcaraz’s record. It was crucial reflection time for Alcaraz and his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, who emphasized the importance of their focused training.

“Our 15-day preparation was pivotal; we concentrated on the finer details to better face Jannik,” Ferrero stated. “We closely analyzed our previous matches. On hard courts, Jannik has proven to be a formidable opponent, consistently winning matches. This emphasis on improvement has made a significant difference,” he added.

Ready for the high-stakes US Open final, Alcaraz embarked on a winner-takes-all battle not only for the tournament title but also for the World No. 1 position. The 22-year-old delivered an outstanding performance, defeating the top seed 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a captivating two hours and 42 minutes.

“We meticulously prepared for this match, analyzing specific strategies. Carlos executed everything perfectly—this is no small feat,” Ferrero remarked. “His today’s performance was simply spectacular. He committed to being aggressive, applying early pressure on Jannik, which was key.”

“Both players strike the ball vigorously, and the one who dictates play often gains the upper hand. While Carlos possesses greater shot variety—utilizing slices and net approaches—this adaptability has been beneficial.”

Alcaraz’s serving prowess significantly bolstered his success throughout the tournament, especially in the final. He won 98 out of 101 service games, confronting only one break point against Sinner, who converted that single opportunity.

“This marks a period of notable improvement in his serving, which has been incredibly advantageous in crucial moments,” Ferrero noted. “Throughout both Cincinnati and the US Open, strong serving truly is a determining factor for winning championships.”

It All Adds Up

Ferrero reminisced about Alcaraz’s infectious smile from the age of 12 or 13, which had only faltered in challenging moments on the court. That joy was vividly present in Arthur Ashe Stadium as he captivated the audience en route to securing his sixth Grand Slam title.

“We constantly remind him to enjoy the game, to remain calm under pressure, and to pursue each point with confidence,” Ferrero reflected. “Carlos’s style certainly makes it easier for him than for many others.”

While challenges were inevitable, Alcaraz improved his head-to-head record against Sinner to 10-5, successfully balancing the four major titles this season.

“I confidently declare that Carlos’s match execution was flawless,” Ferrero concluded. “His overall performance was nothing short of extraordinary.”
