CINCINNATI — Jannik Sinner, currently ranked as the world’s No. 1 men’s tennis player, has officially pulled out of the Cincinnati Open on Sunday due to a knee injury.
Since winning his second consecutive Wimbledon title last month, Sinner has not participated in any competitions, including the Toronto tournament that commenced Wednesday.
At just 24 years old, Sinner boasts five Grand Slam titles and is one victory away from achieving a career Grand Slam, needing only the French Open.
“After discussions with my doctors and support team, I regret to announce my withdrawal from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” stated the Italian star in a release from tournament officials. “My right knee has been giving me trouble and, despite our efforts with the medical team, I must accept that I’m not ready to compete. I’m truly disappointed to miss out on Cincinnati, but I’m now focused on recovery and looking forward to the U.S. Open next.”
Sinner’s decision mirrors that of Carlos Alcaraz, who also announced on Tuesday that he will not be competing in the hard-court event in Cincinnati due to a persistent wrist injury.
This means that fans in Cincinnati will miss the chance to see either of the top two players in the world when men’s singles action kicks off on Saturday.
Two years ago, Sinner clinched the Cincinnati title, a key stop ahead of the U.S. Open and a critical warm-up. He went on to triumph in the U.S. Open that same year.
Last year, Alcaraz claimed the championship from Sinner with a four-set victory in the U.S. Open final. The 23-year-old Spaniard will be looking to defend his title when the main draw begins on August 30.
