Jannik Sinner continued his remarkable run by overpowering Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 7-6(4) at the Erste Bank Open, securing his place in the quarter-finals in Vienna.
The top seed delivered his swiftest victory of the season on Wednesday, breezing past Daniel Altmaier in a mere 58 minutes. Although Sinner dominated early against Cobolli, he had to remain steadfast after the first set to extend his undefeated streak against Italian opponents to 17.
“He has been on an incredible trajectory this season, improving consistently,” Sinner reflected. “I was eager to compete against him, as we hadn’t played before. He’s a remarkable talent and a fierce competitor. We both showcased some tremendous tennis today. While I had opportunities in the second set, I couldn’t capitalize on them, which is all part of the game. I focused on maintaining a strong mentality, and I’m thrilled with how things unfolded.”
Sinner displayed remarkable control, facing no break points in the first set while attacking Cobolli with relentless depth. The second set proved to be a tougher challenge as he squandered four break point chances against a motivated Cobolli.
However, Sinner excelled in the decisive tie-break, exploiting Cobolli’s crucial double fault at 3-4. With clinical serving, he dismantled Cobolli’s hopes, closing out the match in just 1 hour and 48 minutes.
Having clinched the title during his last Vienna outing in 2023, Sinner now holds a 14-4 record at the event, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. The 24-year-old has also triumphed in his last 18 indoor matches and is set to clash with Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals.
Bublik stunned Sinner on his way to the championship at the ATP 500 in Halle last June, but Sinner reasserted his dominance at the US Open, winning decisively 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. Currently, Sinner leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 5-2.
