A fresh European locale and an indoor arena did not hinder Jannik Sinner from delivering a masterclass towards victory.

Just four days after clinching an ATP 500 title in Vienna, the PIF ATP Rankings’ No. 2 launched his Rolex Paris Masters campaign with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 win over Zizou Bergs. Sinner dominated the Belgian in their first-ever matchup, extending his remarkable winning streak to 22 matches on indoor hard courts.

Bergs faced early challenges at La Défense Arena, battling through four break points but still being unable to fend off a break in a lengthy opening game. This early setback set the stage for Sinner’s control of the first set, and another break in the initial game of the second proved decisive.

Sinner, the second seed, showcased his serving prowess throughout, facing no break points and securing 77% (24/31) of points on his first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats. He is set to meet Francisco Cerundolo in the third round, who earlier edged past Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(4).

With his efficient 88-minute victory, Sinner keeps his hopes alive to capitalize on Carlos Alcaraz’s earlier loss in the competition for World No. 1, a spot he could reclaim next Monday with his first Masters 1000 title of the season.

“I felt great on the court,” Sinner stated. “This venue presents unique challenges, and I’ve had difficulties here before. I’m thrilled to have won my opening match. My serve was on point, and starting with an early break really boosted my confidence. Overall, I’m satisfied with my performance today.”

In stark contrast, Sinner’s smooth victory came amidst a gripping clash on Court Central, where Valentin Vacherot triumphed over cousin Arthur Rinderknech in a three-set showdown, extending his Masters 1000 winning streak to an impressive nine matches.

“Arthur is playing exceptionally well right now. The match was tough from start to finish,” Vacherot remarked, now ranked No. 37 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings after advancing to the third round on his Paris debut. “I had a few unforced errors, making it tougher than I would have liked.”

“If I had won in straight sets, it would have been a different tale, but I still hold a lot of confidence in my game.”

Vacherot will next face Cameron Norrie, who bested Alcaraz, for a spot in the quarter-finals in Paris. Daniil Medvedev also progressed on Wednesday after Grigor Dimitrov withdrew due to a shoulder injury.
