On Friday evening at the Erste Bank Open, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik reignited their captivating rivalry. The top-seeded Italian triumphed with a solid score of 6-4, 6-4, moving him two victories away from clinching his fourth title of 2025.

Despite a previous defeat to Bublik in Halle earlier this June, Sinner has turned the tide. The World No. 2 dominated their recent encounters, including a dominant four-round victory at the US Open last month, and showcased exceptional form once again in Vienna.

The 24-year-old overwhelmed World No. 16 Bublik with his relentless power, achieving an impressive performance rating of 9.23—a metric that combines various metrics such as Attack, Conversion, Steal, and Shot Quality. His 58-minute first-round win against Daniel Altmaier had already set a high bar with a performance rating of 9.61, marking it as his second-best this season. Following this quarter-final victory, Sinner leads their head-to-head 6-2.

“It was a challenging matchup, but I’m thrilled,” Sinner remarked. “I tried to return as many balls as I could; he was serving exceptionally well today. I had some early chances in the first set that I couldn’t capitalize on, but I’m pleased with my mental resilience today. Bublik is a formidable player, yet I aimed to remain solid throughout.”

Sinner previously lifted the Vienna trophy in 2023 and holds a commendable 15-4 record at the event, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. Notably, he has won his last 19 indoor matches and will face off against Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals.

De Minaur advanced with a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Matteo Berrettini, marking his 53rd win of the season. Only Carlos Alcaraz has more wins on Tour in 2025. This year, De Minaur has reached four ATP 500 semi-finals, tying with Alcaraz for the most appearances at this stage. De Minaur previously lifted the ATP 500 title in Washington.

After facing a match point against Berrettini at 5-4 on serve, De Minaur managed to prevail in the tense second-set tie-break, improving his head-to-head record with the Italian to 2-3.

Currently ranked seventh in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, De Minaur has a 500-point lead over ninth-placed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who had to retire from his quarter-final match in Basel on Friday. The Australian is on the hunt for his second appearance at the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals.

All Adds Up

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev secured his position in Turin by reaching the Vienna semi-finals without stepping onto the court on Friday. His opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, withdrew due to a back injury.

The two-time year-end champion Zverev, who clinched the Vienna title in 2021, will now meet Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals. Musetti recently defeated Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-4 and aims for his maiden trip to the Nitto ATP Finals. Holding the last qualifying spot at eighth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, he trails seventh-placed De Minaur by just 60 points.

Picking up a personal-best 41st victory of the season by defeating Moutet, Musetti hopes to extend his winning record against Zverev, leading their head-to-head series 3-1 after a notable win in last year’s Vienna quarter-finals.
