The Nitto ATP Finals brings an electrifying twist to the competition, with its unique round-robin format intensifying the clashes among the sport’s elite. The spotlight remains on Turin, where Wednesday will see the second singles matches in the esteemed Bjorn Borg Group.

Both Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev will vie for the top position in the group, entering their evening clash at 1-0. Meanwhile, Ben Shelton and Felix Auger-Aliassime will fight to avoid a 0-2 deficit in the standings.

In doubles, the upcoming match between Joe Salisbury & Neal Skupski against Harri Heliovaara & Henry Patten will determine who stands tall in the John McEnroe Group at 2-0. Right after, Americans Christian Harrison and Evan King will face off against Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic, both seeking their first win.

In a thrilling update, Carlos Alcaraz’s recent comeback victory over Taylor Fritz has brought him close to clinching the ATP Year-End No. 1 title. However, Sinner can turn up the heat on his rival with a third win against Zverev in less than three weeks. To surpass Alcaraz for the top spot, Sinner must emerge as an undefeated champion at the Nitto ATP Finals while hoping Alcaraz does not secure further victories this week.

The Italian star boasts a narrow 5-4 Lexus ATP Head2Head lead against Zverev, claiming victories in both the Australian Open final and the Vienna final earlier this season, as well as the Paris semi-finals. Their initial encounters in 2025 were tightly contested, particularly the Vienna finale which Sinner won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Despite Zverev’s ankle injury affecting his performance in Paris, he notably showed resilience in his opening match in Turin against Shelton, winning 6-3, 7-6(6) while saving two set points in a fierce second-set tie-break.

“Playing against Sascha is always a unique experience,” Sinner reflected after their Paris encounter, expressing empathy for his rival’s unfortunate circumstances.

In his match against Shelton, Zverev was in stellar form, winning 84% of his first-serve points without conceding a break point, as reported by Infosys ATP Stats. Sinner, however, delivered an even more formidable serve, clinching a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Auger-Aliassime with an impressive 89% of first-serve points won, also without facing a break point.

“He’s tough to beat anywhere, especially here,” remarked Auger-Aliassime about Sinner post-match. “He started strong and maintained his momentum throughout. Truly the toughest opponent to face here.”

The last time Zverev bested Sinner was back at the 2023 US Open, in a grueling five-set match filled with lengthy rallies. Both players excel at baseline exchanges, yet the faster court conditions in Turin could necessitate a quicker pace.

Since that US Open encounter, Zverev enjoyed a four-match winning streak against Sinner, but the Italian has since reversed his fortunes with four consecutive victories and aims to leverage the home advantage at the Inalpi Arena.

Ben Shelton faces Auger-Aliassime

Although neither Shelton nor Auger-Aliassime managed to win a set or secure a break point in their Turin debuts, both have reasons for optimism entering their second matches. Shelton displayed his attacking prowess against Zverev, nearly forcing a decisive third set. In contrast, Auger-Aliassime pushed World No. 1 Sinner to the brink before a left calf issue hindered his performance.

Auger-Aliassime noted that his injury was “not serious” and expressed confidence in facing Sinner, crediting the Italian for his strong play. Now, he faces another formidable challenge against Shelton’s powerful serve.

“He’s incredibly aggressive, probably one of the most aggressive players on the tour,” Zverev commented on Shelton after their opener. “When he’s serving, the point always remains under his control.”

Having faced Sinner, Auger-Aliassime approaches this critical must-win match against Shelton without fear. At 0-2, his chances of progressing to the knockout rounds are diminished.

“I’ve never felt fear because this isn’t a battle of life and death,” Auger-Aliassime stated regarding his mindset after facing Sinner. “For me, it’s a tennis battle. I remain focused and driven.”

Both Auger-Aliassime and Shelton know that everything hinges on serve. Based on Tennis IQ metrics powered by PIF, Shelton boasts an impressive Serve Quality score of 8.64 out of 10, while Auger-Aliassime follows closely with 8.47. In the 2025 ATP Tour season, Shelton ranks 11th and Auger-Aliassime 14th based on these statistics.

Doubles Action
Despite missing out on the Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 title — clinched by the British duo Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool after their win on Tuesday — Heliovaara and Patten are still vying for the Turin title. Following their opening match win against Harrison and King (6-4, 6-4), they will now clash with Salisbury and Skupski for the top spot in the John McEnroe Group.
