NEW YORK — Jannik Sinner has made a triumphant return to the U.S. Open semifinals, overpowering No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday night. This marked the first all-Italian clash in a men’s major quarterfinal.

As the No. 1 seed, Sinner’s path to title defense has been smooth sailing. On Friday, he will face No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who triumphed over No. 8 Alex de Minaur with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4).

Entering his fifth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, Sinner is on the verge of achieving a historic feat; a win on Friday would see him reach the finals of all four major tournaments this calendar year. He has impressively secured 26 straight victories on hard court majors, including his victories at the last two Australian Opens and last year’s U.S. Open.

“It was an outstanding performance. Very solid, especially with such a strong start,” Sinner remarked.

In just 2 hours, he dispatched Musetti, with the first set lasting a mere 27 minutes. Sinner showcased his resilience by saving all seven break points he encountered. Remarkably, he has relinquished just 38 games across his five matches, one of the lowest totals for any man reaching the U.S. Open semifinals since 2020.

Sinner, who has achieved the remarkable feat of winning 31 consecutive service games, claimed 42 out of 46 first-serve points (91%).

For Musetti, this match was a quest to reach his first U.S. Open semifinal after making it to the same stage at the French Open this year and Wimbledon in 2024. Unfortunately, he stumbled out of the gate, trailing 5-0 and securing only nine points compared to Sinner’s 25 in the opening set.

As the match progressed, Musetti began to find opportunities against Sinner’s serve, but he was unable to convert any breaks that could have changed the match’s momentum.

“We had to put our friendship aside during the match, but once we shake hands, everything is fine,” Sinner added.
