Former World No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion, Jamie Murray, announced his retirement from professional tennis on social media this Wednesday.

“After an incredible 36-year journey, I am closing this chapter,” the Scottish hero wrote in a heartfelt Instagram message. “I am immensely grateful for the unforgettable experiences this wonderful sport has gifted me.”

“A heartfelt thanks to Mum, Dad, Andy, Ale, Alan, Louis, and Thomas for your unwavering support and sacrifices that helped me achieve everything I have in tennis.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Murray clinched 34 tour-level titles, including two alongside his brother Andy. He made history as the first British player to ascend to World No. 1 in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings, with his last appearance being the US Open in 2025 alongside Ivan Dodig.

Beginning his ATP Tour journey in 2007 with a title in San Jose alongside Eric Butorac, Murray consistently showcased his talent, securing at least one trophy in 16 out of his 18 professional seasons between 2007 and 2024.

“To everyone who has supported me, thank you! I am eager to step into the next chapter of my life,” Murray expressed.

Of his impressive collection of tour-level titles, twelve were won with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares, including major victories at the Australian Open and US Open in 2016. They graced the Nitto ATP Finals four times as well.

“This is a momentous occasion,” Soares shared with ATPTour.com. “First and foremost, I congratulate Jamie on his incredible achievements. He is not just a World No. 1 and Grand Slam champion but also a dear friend. The chemistry we developed on and off the court propelled us to greatness.”

Murray also made a mark at the Nitto ATP Finals with John Peers in 2015, where they celebrated eight tour-level titles together.

“What Jamie has done is nothing short of extraordinary!” Peers remarked. “Having been his first partner on the ATP Tour, I cherish the memories we created and the triumphs we shared.”

Australian player Matthew Ebden also enjoyed success alongside Murray, winning at Winston-Salem in 2022. He praised Murray’s professionalism and genuine character.

“Being Jamie’s partner was a delight,” Ebden commented. “Winning a title together was immensely special, but getting to know him as an individual with strong morals made our time together unforgettable.”
