Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led Italy to a remarkable third consecutive Davis Cup title on Sunday, triumphing over Spain in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Bologna.

In the first match of the tie, Berrettini delivered a stellar performance, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta from Spain with a score of 6-3, 6-4, giving Italy a fantastic start. Cobolli, however, faced a tough battle, initially falling behind 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 against Jaume Munar, but staged an impressive comeback, igniting jubilant celebrations among the Italian fans and team.

With victories in the Davis Cup Finals in 2023 and 2024 held in Malaga, Italy now becomes the first nation since the United States (1968-1972) to achieve the impressive feat of three consecutive titles.

Berrettini’s outstanding service game set the tone for a successful day, as he fired an impressive 13 aces without facing a single break point, completing his match in just 79 minutes. The No. 56 player in the PIF ATP Rankings has now triumphed in 11 consecutive Davis Cup encounters, dating back to 2022.

It All Adds Up

With Italy relying heavily on Cobolli, the 23-year-old showed remarkable determination, bouncing back from a challenging start against Munar. After losing the first set and facing an early break in the second, he crucially leveled the match and, after battling through multiple set points, forced a deciding third set where he made the pivotal break in the 11th game. Cobolli’s journey this week was truly noteworthy, having saved seven match points in his epic semifinal victory against Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.

Spain was contesting the Davis Cup Finals for the first time since their 2019 victory, having defeated Germany and Czechia to reach the final.

Did You Know?
Italy has now distinguished itself as the first non-Grand Slam nation to win both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup titles in the same season on multiple occasions, joining the ranks of the United States and Australia. Notably, Italy secured this achievement without key players Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.
